This beautiful African species has two colour forms: in the dry season, the wings are pearly white but in the wet season they are greenish-white with a violet sheen. The females lay their tiny eggs on Chinese Violet (Asystasia gangetica), which seems prone to rust disease in tropical glasshouses but can form invasive ground cover in its natural habitat. The wings of these butterflies soon become worn and damaged, so only a small proportion of those that have died of natural causes yields material that is useful for making jewellery.
