more reflective and
iridescent than its
commoner relatives
Morpho didius and M.
menelaus. Although
the wings are quite
large their fragile, tinfoil-like surface is easily damaged and so only a small proportion of wings from our naturally-expired butterflies is suitable for these large 40 x 30 mm pendants. We bred our butterflies in a tropical glasshouse in the 1980s, to explore their suitability for the newly-opening Butterfly Houses. Although they bred quite successfully on bamboo, the butterflies spent most of their time high up in the vegetation and so were too inconspicuous for a living display.
