This spectacular species occurs in the south-east Pacific, from Indonesia to Queensland, where it inhabits tropical rainforests and has even colonized suburban gardens. In Australia it is widely bred under Government license to produce chrysalids for butterfly houses and killed specimens for decoration. The females prefer to lay their eggs on fresh regrowth of Evodia trees that have been lopped or felled and the species recently seems to have benefited from widespread planting of pink-flowered doughwood (Melicope elleryana).
