This butterfly is found
from Mexico to Bolivia,
mostly in the cloud
forests where its
caterpillars feed on
Celtis trees. The females
spend most of their
time high in the canopy
but the males often
come down to visit rotting fruit and patches of damp sand. Like the blue Morpho butterflies, this species has long been collected in huge numbers for the tourist and decorative trades on account of its superb iridescence. The wings we use are from butterflies we bred in the 1980s. Owing to their small size, we are only able to make the medium 30x22mm pendants using these fragments but matching earrings are also available.
